YOUNGSTERS can brush up their IT skills and have fun at summer schools in Redcar and Cleveland.

The borough council is running eight week-long schools, aimed at year five and six pupils who are moving up next term, with mornings spent on computer work and afternoons on activities including basketball with the Teesside Mohawks and a trip to the University of Teesside's Virtual reality Centre.

Sessions run from 10am to 3pm. Some free transport is available.

The courses, which start on Monday, run at the City Learning Centre in Eston, Coatham Local Learning Centre and Redcar Education Development Centre.

Keith Scott, the council's study support co-ordinator, said: "We're aiming at children moving from year five to six or year six to seven and whose IT skills could do with a boost.

"But I can promise it's not all work - there's plenty of time for children to enjoy themselves too."

More than 100 children have signed up and more places are available.
