SLICES of turf from a doomed football pitch go on sale this morning.
Bishop Auckland Football Club, one of the most famous amateur clubs in the world, is moving from its Kingsway stadium after 119 years.
To mark the demise of the old stadium, the club is offering fans the chance to buy a piece of history.
Sections of the pitch are to be cut up this morning and supporters will be able to buy a one-foot square piece.
The pitch has been graced by some of the most famous names in the amateur game, including Bob Hardisty, former Liverpool manager Bob Paisley, goalkeeper Harry Sharratt and Warren Bradley, who went on to play for Manchester United and England.
The Northern Echo has joined forces with the club to offer a special discount to the first 200 people who turn up with a copy of today's paper.
They will have the chance to buy a piece of turf and limited edition T-shirt for £7.50, instead of the full price of £10. A piece of turf alone will cost £3.50.
Club officials will begin cutting the turf at 7am and the first pieces will go on sale at 10am.
