A COUNTY Durham civil engineering company has invested more than £350,000 to help cope with a bulging order book.

Greenfield has spent the money on plant and equipment.

The firm has been in the specialist earthmoving and groundworks business for 16 years and turnover has grown to £6.75m.

A series of big contract wins made the company examine the amount it was spending on hiring plant and machinery.

Director Nick Redpath said: "Not only was it costly to keep hiring the plant we needed, it was also limiting the level of business we could achieve."

The star of the new fleet is the Caterpillar self-propelled roller, which cost £45,000.

The others included two JCB backhoe loaders, a bulldozer and a dump truck.

Full operator training has already been carried out on all the new plant and equipment, used on sites in the region.

Greenfield employs more than 90 at its base in Durham.
