WHEN fundraiser Sylvia Milson and a friend failed to get into the Great North Run, they were not put off in the least.

They still wanted to run to raise money for a local good cause - so they decided to stage an event of their own.

As a result, a new road race is coming to North Yorkshire, the Ryedale Run, which will start and finish in Malton on September 29.

The aim is to give the towns of Malton and Norton a boost and to raise money for the local hospital.

It all started when Ms Milson and a friend failed to get into the Great North Run. "We thought, if we can't get into that run, why don't we start one ourselves," she said.

The race of approximately ten-miles, will start and end at the old show field in Malton, but most of the course will be in the countryside. There will also be a one-mile fun run for seven to 15-year-olds. Entry fees for the main race are £7 for attached runners, £8 for unattached; £6 and £7 for teams, with a minimum of five people per team. To enter the fun run costs £1.

The deadline for entries is August 31. For an entry form, telephone (01653) 690133 during business hours or send a stamped self-addressed envelope to: Ryedale Run, c/o 64 Wheelgate, Malton, Ryedale YO17 7HP.
