A North-East businessman has hailed pop star Zoe Birkett as a good role model for youngsters and tipped her for even bigger fame.

Duncan Bannatyne, whose business empire is based in Darlington, Zoe's home town, has praised the Pop Idol finalist after she began a fitness regime at one of his health clubs.

Zoe is due to embark on a 22-date nationwide tour of the country in October alongside the contest's final two, Gareth Gates and winner Will Young.

Since Pop Idol finished, Zoe has gone on one tour and performed at Feel The Noise Live events, including those held in the region by TFM and Metro Radio.

But while at home, she has been working out at Bannatyne's Darlington branch, to help keep up her stamina for touring.

Mr Bannatyne, chairman of the 24-club firm, said: "Zoe is a good role model for young people. She knows what she wants and she works very hard to get it."

Zoe said: "It is important to stay fit, not only for someone like me who is a performer, but for people to stay healthy as long as possible too."

Mr Bannatyne said: "I am delighted she is a Bannatyne's member and I hope we can continue to support her healthy lifestyle as she inevitably becomes more and more famous.
