A mental health services unit was officially opened yesterday.

South Easington's Mental Health services have been moved to Merrick House, in Seaside Lane, Easington, east Durham.

Dr Roger Bolas, chief executive of Easington Primary Care Trust, unveiled a plaque to mark the opening.

The unit will provide a range of community mental health services under one roof.

The Tees and North Yorkshire NHS Trust's community psychiatric staff will work alongside Easington's social services personnel to provide an integrated mental health service to a population of 75,000.

Community mental health team manager Nigel Ord said he was delighted with the new premises.

"The trust's mental health staff were previously based in Peterlee Health Centre, while the social workers were based in Seaham and managers and administrative staff were at the University Hospital of Hartlepool," he said.

"Moving to Merrick House means that, as well as being in a much improved working environment, we are now able to work together with our partners from the Primary Care Trust, South of the Tyne and Wearside NHS Trust (Mental Health), Durham Social Services and the wider community, with the aim of providing fully integrated mental health services."
