Former smithy plan rejected

PLANS to convert a former village blacksmith's shop into a granny annex have been blocked. The scheme for The Old Smithy, Grantley, near Ripon, also included a two-storey side extension, detached garage and converting an existing garage into extra living space. But Harrogate Borough Council turned down the application. It was felt the size of the proposed granny annex and its roof form would be detrimental to the character of a traditional roadside building, and that the planned garage and retaining walls would unduly urbanise agricultural land within the Nidderdale Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty.
