HE has been the custodian of many a well-tended garden across the land for countless years - and now the British gnome is to be honoured in style.

Fans of the novelty outdoor ornaments are in for a treat this weekend at Beningbrough Hall, near York, when the stately home opens its doors for an unusual celebration.

Visitors will be invited to take along their favourites from home for the gnomes' equivalent of a teddy bears' picnic.

The idea came from the hall's property manager, Ray Barker, who noticed that an image on the cartouche - an architectural feature - at south steps closely resembled a gnome.

After naming it the Great Gnome of Beningbrough, Mr Barker decided that his new-found friend should preside over a series of activities on Sunday, from noon to 4pm.

Allyson Hodgson, assistant to the property manager, said: "We have been totally bowled over by the response to this idea - it has truly gone national.

"People have been ringing us saying they're coming in gnome costumes, even if they don't have a gnome.

"We hope it's really going to do wonders for the hall."

Activities on the day will include Seek the Gnome - a chance to hunt pictures in the grounds - dressing a giant gnome, and Punch and Judy.
