A COMMUNITY garden has been officially opened in Hartlepool.

Councillor Carl Richardson, chairman of Hartlepool Borough Council, opened the garden which is behind Jutland Road Community Centre.

The Jubilee Community Garden was the idea of Rossmere and Seaton Grange Resident's Association (RSGRA), which is based in the community building.

It was made possible by a £5,400 grant from the Owton Rossmere Partnership, £2,700 from the European Regional Development Fund, and £1,000 from Pride in Hartlepool.

Tioxide in Hartlepool also gave £50 towards the garden.

Coun Richardson said: "It's not just good for this particular area - it's the way forward for the whole town."

Lynda Wanley from RSGRA said: "The garden will not only offer a safe place for youngsters to play but also an attractive venue for evening barbecues and other events for older people.

"Creating the garden has been a real community effort and the project has only become a reality thanks to the generous grants we received."
