A tall order for the property gurus.

Property seekers Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp had a tall order in Macclesfield. The first home that newlyweds Andy and Emily were looking for needed a room capable of housing taking their "rather sizeable" bed.

At 6ft 5ins, Andy is a tall lad. This was clearly a case where size did count in the bedroom. Other rooms as well, what with him having to bend down to get through doors and finding the ceiling only inches from his head in cosy cottages. Still, they did have the services of Phil and Kirstie.

This pair of TV estate agents have been delivering big audiences for Channel 4. Quite why this property show has taken off where others have failed to reach the asking price is a difficult one to answer. Perhaps it's the simple format. The buyers state their requirements and their budget, and are then shown five potential properties. If they like any, they get the TV presenters to put in an offer. Along the way we get to nose round other people's homes while they're out, and criticise their taste in decoration and furniture.

Andy's height wasn't the only problem. The couple didn't have any preference for the type of property they wanted. Even their budget was elastic - a top end of £220,000, although they wouldn't mind paying £150,000 on a place that needed work doing. As Phil pointed out, this vague brief meant they were "not sure what they want or where they want it".

One of the joys is seeing Phil and Kirstie try to sway the couple as they point out the pros and cons, not always directly but by subtle and not so subtle hints. "Great proportions, they don't come much better than this," said Phil, not about Kirstie but the first house.

The second got the thumbs down. "I feel too big for the house," declared Andy. By the time we reached the third, Kirstie was up to one of her favourite tricks - knocking down walls. She loves suggesting demolishing walls to make bigger rooms. But, what's that you can see out of the window? It's a graveyard. "Well, they did say they wanted somewhere quiet," jested Phil.

Property number four had a rural setting, unless you counted the bus depot, industrial estate and landfill site within spitting distance.

Kirstie and Phil admitted they loved the fifth potential home they viewed, but Emily thought it "a bit pink" and Andy worried about the pizza shop next door, saying: "We might be tempted to get a takeaway every night".

Things turned nasty on discovering that someone had already made an offer that had been turned down on the house they liked. Then, on learning that others were viewing the place, the same people had made a fresh offer for the full asking price. After much deliberation, Andy and Emily decided against putting in a higher offer.

A post script showed there was a happy ending - they'd had their offer accepted on a detached house in the heart of Macclesfield.
