A PARK is set to be spruced up by volunteers celebrating the 40th anniversary of their organisation.

Community Services Volunteers (CSV) will set to work on Nuns Moor Park, Newcastle, on Friday and Saturday.

The CSV is the country's leading volunteer organisation, providing thousands of people across the country with the opportunity to take an active part in the life of their community through volunteering, training and community projects.

To mark the anniversary the group has organised the Great Parks Makeover, which will see volunteers across 40 towns and cities tidying up their local parks.

Volunteers will plant, fell and weed the parks, brightening them up for everyone in the community to enjoy.

The event has been organised by the CSV Action Desk at BBC Radio Newcastle, which will be broadcasting from the park on both days. Presenter Marian Foster will also unveil a new park bench to commemorate the event.

Newcastle City Council's parks and countryside service will supply equipment and expertise to the volunteers.

Anthony McKenna, the council's parks and countryside manager for Newcastle, said: "Over the years, volunteers have played an important role in the maintenance of the city's parks.

"This is why we were delighted when CSV offered to help tidy up Nuns Moor Park as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations.

"Of course, the work of CSV reaches across every aspect of community life, which makes it all the more appropriate that they should help restore the park, a facility that everyone in the community can enjoy."
