ARTISTS' groups throughout the city of York have clubbed together to raise nearly £1,900 for local good causes.

Members of York Art Society, Art Options, Northern Potters' Association and various independent artists, with City of York Council's city centre management team, have handed the cash over to the Lord Mayor's charities.

The partners, who staged two successful exhibitions of their works in April and June, yesterday presented a cheque for £1,834 to the Lord Mayor, Councillor David Horton, in the council chamber at the Guildhall.

John Wood, the council's city centre officer, said: "The exhibitions are recognised widely as probably the best opportunity in the North of England for local artists to exhibit their talents and this year attracted 240 exhibitors."

Next year's exhibitions will take place on April 26 and 27 and June 5 and 6.

Artists wishing to participate should contact their appropriate society representatives and independents should liaise with the city centre management team at Central Building, Parliament Street, York.
