A PROJECT aimed at improving habitats on the region's rivers is nearing completion.
The Northumbrian River Project is aimed at upgrading waterway environments and boosting the rural economy.
Work during the scheme has included removal of any obstructions to fish passage and promoting tourism in improved areas.
Chairman of the Northumbrian River Project, Hugh Becker, said: "The project is based on the principle that environmental gain can translate into economic gain through increased demand for river-based tourism, particularly angling and wildlife tourism.
"By working with the rural community this will in turn increase demand for farm based accommodation and provide commercial opportunities within the rural economy as a whole.''
