A MULTI-STOREY car park which featured in the cult movie Get Carter has been designated a heritage site.

It has been included among a list of places of special cultural interest to be highlighted in a series of open days.

For two days next month, visitors to Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, can have a guided tour of the car park.

Film fans will get the chance to look in every nook and cranny of the normally inaccessible upper floors.

But it could be the last time visitors get the chance to enjoy a guided tour of the landmark, scene of the 1970 Michael Caine movie, because it could be demolished as part of the town's shopping centre redevelopment.

Chris Riley, of the Get Carter Appreciation Society, said: "I think the tours will be very popular and I'll definitely be going.

"It is a unique building, unusual and ugly, but if they pull it down it will be a great loss. It is part of the personality of Gateshead now."

More than 800,000 people are expected to take part in the open days from Friday to Monday, September 13 to 16.

Councillor John McElroy, Gateshead Borough Council cabinet member for learning and culture, said: "The heritage open days will show local people just how many interesting buildings there are in Gateshead, many of which they may pass every day without realising just what is inside them.

"The tours will give a flavour of the past, present and future of Gateshead.

"And, of course, I am sure we will be get lots of interest in the tour around

the Gateshead multi-storey car park, a chance to see inside a reminder of

Gateshead's recent past and an opportunity to view Gateshead's future from its summit."
