A FUN day will mark the success of a project that aims to improve the quality of life of residents.

The New Safer Deal for Communities Day will celebrate the achievements of three of the New Deal for Communities Projects; the Newcastle West New Deal Police Team, the Arson Task Force and Tradesafe.

It will be held today between 1pm and 7pm at Elswick Park and Leisure Pool, Newcastle, and will be opened by Byker Grove stars Emma Miller and Paul Johnson.It will also feature the official opening of the New Deal Police House.

There will be displays by the police dog handling team and young firefighters, a Galaxy Radio roadshow, various competitions, demonstrations of Hapkido and Tai Chi, and a range of food reflecting the ethnic diversity of the local community.

Sergeant Dave Culverwell, of Newcastle West area command, who leads the team, said: "This is a day for the New Deal community to see the work which we and our partners are doing to reduce crime and disorder and improve the quality of life for those in the area.

"The emphasis is on fun, and we hope all members of the community will join in."
