FOUR athletes are to compete against each other and the clock in a race in Durham on Bank Holiday Monday.

The challenge will be to run around Palace Green before the cathedral's midday chimes finish. The event, based on a scene from the film Chariots of Fire, has previously been held at Lichfield Cathedral. Last year's winner, James Thie, a British 1500m international and a member of Cardiff Athletic Club, will compete again. He said: "The npower dash is a fantastic concept - a great race staged at an impressive venue."

Three Durham runners will also take part.

They are Tom Curry, president of Durham University's athletics union, Toby Glover, captain of the university's athletics club, and Steven Clifford, of Bannatynes Health Club.
