HUNDREDS of youngsters were taken back to the era of the cowboy yesterday.

Burns Green, outside Chester-le-Street Leisure Centre, staged a Wild West Show featuring Martell's Raiders.

The event featured bullwhip and rope spinning, stunt fights and a fast draw competition.

It was one of a series of wacky Wednesday events designed to keep children amused through the holidays.

Next Wednesday will feature a balloon blower, magician, face painting and disco in a pool.

Assistant operations manager Carl Hagemann said: "It was a good day. We had about 450 people and they enjoyed it."

It will be held in the leisure centre from 10am to 3.30pm. There will be a cover charge.
