HUNDREDS of youngsters, including those with special needs, are enjoying a new sport thanks to a £3,500 grant.

Young athletes with disabilities in Stanley are among those becoming hooked on New Age Curling. The sport is based on the Olympic event of curling, but can be played indoors on any smooth surface.

The sports equipment was provided by the local Rotary Club, which won a £3,500 grant to fund the scheme.

Club member Alan Aughton said: "This was an excellent project for us because it is an integrated game. People with disabilities can compete with anybody aged from three to 103."

The club found funding for the equipment with help from the Derwentside Council for Voluntary Services (CVS), based in the Louisa Centre in Stanley.

The cash bought 16 sets of New Age Curling equipment and the demand for them is growing. "All our sets are out there in use in the community," said Mr Aughton.

"The response has been brilliant. The next step will be to see about setting up a local league."
