AN American listening base is continuing to step up its security measures following the September 11 attacks in America and recent incidents involving peace protestors.

New road barriers, a new guard hut and security areas near the main gates are being planned for the Menwith Hill base near Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

A new perimeter fence and security lighting is also being erected around the 560-acre site.

In the past, peace campaigners have breached security measures at the site, which provides early warning of ballistic missile launches.

The Menwith centre, on the fringe of Blubberhouses Moor, is famous for its 64ft high radomes, known as golf balls, which dominate the skyline in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Harrogate Borough Council's planning officers have been consulted about the latest security measures, which are part of a planning application.

However, although the council is able to comment on the measures it is not permitted to refuse the application, which is made in the name of the Ministry of Defence.

Planning officers have decided not to object to the plans.

Meanwhile, Menwith's American post office is the subject of a separate planning application to extend the building.
