ECHOES of Willington's industrial heritage are being captured in a town centre sculpture.

Willington Community Partnership and youth group members have worked with Hunwick artist Graeme Hopper on designs for the four- metre feature which will stand on a newly paved area in the High Street.

It will link with two proposed entrance features which are awaiting planning permission.

Mr Hopper said: "Willington has a long and distinguished history of industry, be it mining, railways or agriculture, and this should not be forgotten. The large feature will reflect this strong industrial heritage whilst giving the traveller a glimpse of a bright and hopeful future."

The Single Regeneration Budget is funding the project, with support from the partnership and Groundwork West Durham.

Steve Trotter, from Groundwork, said: "Plans for improvements are also under way for other areas of Willington. All projects are community-led and local people are involved from the start to identify priorities for environmental enhancement."
