Durham Tigers ended their season in style, beating Chester Wolves 32-25 away from home.

Durham Tigers dispelled many of the disappointments of earlier defeats in the play-off phase with a fine performance at Northern Division side Chester Jets.

An exciting final fixture was played in searing heat and despite a semi-final place no longer being attainable, Durham were keen to end with a win and uphold North Eastern pride.

Tries from Naylor (2), Johnston and Jones, all converted by Houston were matched by the Wolves, and as the game entered its final quarter two tired sides were tied at 24-24. The Wolves then claimed the lead with a drop goal. Tigers refused to panic however, and continued pressure brought them a kickable penalty that young Hoyston slotted over for a 26-25 lead.

A frantic last ten minutes saw the Tigers make the game safe with a second try for Johnston.

"I'm very pleased how we competed today," said player-coach Jones. "To come down here and win - and finish in the top half of our play-off Group - is a great achievement for us."

Teesside Steelers maintained their unbeaten record with a 21-0 win over Rotherham Giants. This means they top the group ahead of Manchester Giants and progress to the semi-finals. An 18-0 win for the Giants over Bridlington Bulls wasn't enough.

Newcastle Knights finished with a superb 40-14 win over Derby City, and must now wait to see if they qualify for the Shield Semi-Finals as best runners up. Sunderland lost 29-0 to Crewe Wolves who qualify as group winners.
