A CINEMA re-opened only three months ago after being shut for four years is facing closure again because of poor attendances.

Jeremy Powell, owner of The Palace Cinema, Malton, said audiences at some of the screenings had been down to between ten and 20, despite some block-busting films. He said: "I believe we are doing a service for the community but it really is a case of 'use it, or lose it'. Among future star presentations is the latest James Bond adventure Die Another Day."

PARK AND RIDE: A travelling fair returns to Catterick Garrison next month - by popular demand. White-knuckle rides, a fun house for children, bumper cars and waltzers, and all the traditional fun of the fair will be on land adjacent to the garrison's new shopping complex, from 5pm on Wednesday, September 4. EXHIBITION DATE: An exhibition of work by Duncan Storr opens at Middleham's Old School Arts Workshop with a private viewing from 7pm on Thursday, September 5. Imagination, Colour and Light includes recent paintings and stained glass by the artist. GOOD FELLOWS: Two academics at York University have received top honours. Professor Alan Williams, of the Centre for Health Economics, has been elected to a senior fellowship of the British Academy, and Professor John McDermid, of the computer science department, has been made a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

SKATE PARK: A skateboard park built in the towns of Malton and Norton has led to a sharp decline in youth crime, Norton councillor David Lloyd-Williams has said.
