A NORTH-EAST bakery's sausage rolls and pies have been immortalised in song after three writers penned a musical.

Even West End talent scouts have shown interest in Greggs - The musical, which is based around a tense plot about the theft of corned beef pasties.

The musical has just completed a three-week run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where audiences were treated to sausage rolls and other Greggs products during the interval.

Bosses at Greggs were so impressed when they were sent the script of the musical, by budding writers Edwina Lunn, Jill Peacock and Susanne Fraser, that the company decided to support it financially at the fringe.

Now Greggs bosses believe it could soon rival West End musicals such as Mama Mia and Miss Saigon.

Greggs' managing director, Mike Darrington, said the company, which has more than 900 stores in the UK, was flattered that script writers wanted to make a musical about his sausage rolls.

"Savouries and sandwiches are part of our everyday life. Greggs is an institution and the musical is great fun. It is something that is a bit unique and shows that as a company we like to have a laugh."

The musical revolves around events in a Greggs' shop, with the fictional Mr Greggs, a shy millionaire, keeping in touch with staff via a voice over, giving the workers the day's "mission".

A roller-coaster ride of an adventure follows, involving the efforts of workers to beat off the competition posed by a string of fancy French coffee shops.

A Greggs spokesman said: "We are very excited about the possibility of the musical becoming a big hit and all our staff think it's excellent.

"Naturally, at the end of each show we will be serving free jam doughnuts for all."
