A total of 94 rods lined the banks of the Lower Tees at Yarm for the eagerly awaited NFA Embassy Pairs and Cleveland Angling Centre's Rob Morgan and Andy Hamilton produced a five star performance booking their place in the Embassy Pairs Grand Final in Spain next year with a stunning 92 points just eight short of the maximum, writes Jeff Herbert.

The river was low clear and lacking flow but surprisingly bream showed in B section downstream of Yarm road bridge.

The pegs below the Levenmouth dominated individual placings delivering a tremendous 41.14.8 for Newman Scott ace Derek Fox.

Derek on peg 156 had a single skimmer and a few roach on the pole at ten metres. Going onto the feeder across ten good skimmers came in a hectic opening two hours on the worm. Fifteen perch up to 2.0.0 followed at intervals.

Then in the final 90 minutes the catch rate increased resulting in another ten skimmers up to 2.8.0 responding to three maggots on the hook to leave the rest trailing well behind.

Next Mark Arrowsmith of Anglers Services Durham caught late on. Feeder and worm secured 11 skimmers and the rest perch for 28.5.8 from peg 158 from Phil Arnold of Newman Scott 23.14.0.

Others: Peter Smith (Cleggs) 18.3.0; Ian Bates (Marsh Tackle) 18.0.0; Dave Mills (Marsh Tackle) 15.4.8.

Pairs: 1. Rob Morgan and Andy Hamilton (Cleveland Angling Centre) 92 pts; 2. Dave Smiddy and Phil Arnold (Newman Scott) 85; 3. Mick Lovelass and Peter Close (Darlington AC) 79.

On the River Swale Graham Skirrey of Turners Tackle topped Northallerton's latest open taking 33.3.0 from the Scruton reaches.

Fishing peg 56 upstream of the jetty waggler and red maggot loose feeding casters alongside far bank cover accounted for 8 quality chub backed by chublets and dace.

Runner-up Jeff Herbert of RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco on the run off to Scruton island rolled the bomb and wasp cake through connecting with 13 chub to finish with 27.12.0 from teammate Pat Adams 23.8.0.

The Hutton Beck to Barn Island match length on the River Ure proved hard going by Ripon Piscatorial's very high standards and 21.8.0 was enough for Leeds Albert Heaps to lift the Association's Helmsley Cup.

Upstream of the North Bridge in the willowgarth off peg 212 a combination of caster and bread on the stickfloat resulted in a mixture of chub dace and perch.

A whirlwind finish just two hours to go elevated Bentley AC's Don McAllister into second place. Below the bypass bridge 3 chub to bread and 40 dace to waggler and maggot totalled 16.14.0 from Graham Skirrey of Turners Tackle 15.3.0.

The Boroughbridge Fire Brigade Charity Open on the River Ure fished at Boroughbridge was won with an all chub return when local Kevin Adcock weighed in 18.8.0. Sat 1 below the cow drink on peg 15 Kevin opted for waggler and caster approach despatching 20 specimens into the net.

For Armley's Tony Hewson two bonus chub of 3.0.0 apiece boosted an otherwise roach net off the Hawthorne's peg 28 when stickfloat and maggot brought 11.13.0.

The event raised a creditable £240 towards the Boroughbridge Fire Brigade.

Carp Scene

The top two accumulated 142.8.0 during a spectacular match on Maple Lake at the Oaks Sessay on Thursday and winner local Rab Ogilvy enjoyed a mere 8oz comfort zone.

Rab pole fished pellet at 13 metres of peg five tempting common carp to 7.0.0 on his way to 71.8.0.

Rival Dean Smith of Map Elton did more of the same of peg 43 but a smaller stamp of carp left him agonisingly adrift at the whistle.

Oaks Sunday - Maple Lake: 1 Mark Calvert (Map Elton) 66.12.0; 2 John McGarrell (Map Elton) 61.6.0; 3 Bert Poole (Oaks) 58.12.0.

Saturday's Open at the Woodlands was switched to the island filled Dragonfly Mallard and Swallow lakes and quality carp were the order of the day for the near capacity entry.

Tri Cast Whizzo's John Allerton rattled out 90.15.0 off the island corner from Swallow peg 14 for another memorable day. 'Red' luncheon meat on the pole at 17 metres attracted carp supplemented by over 25.0.0 of small barbel.

Unfancied peg six on Dragonfly came up trumps for Hirst Tackle's Andy Hampson who pushed the pole and sweetcorn out to 16 metres taking a mixed net for an unexpected bag of 71.4.0.

Woodlands Wednesday - Curlew Kestrel Partridge & Skylark (68 rods): 1 G Twohey (E.J Tackle) 75.1.0; 2 R Wilkinson (Newman Scott) 69.14.0; 3 J McGarrell (Map Elton) 69.0.0.
