INTENSIVE discussions have dispelled fears that large-scale roadworks would cause disruption to a market town.

The main A174 road running through Loftus had been made a priority for repairs next month by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, with a new road surface and pavements being laid. The fact that it is the only through road had raised fears that lengthy diversions would have to be implemented, causing problems for commuters and trades people.

But discussions have led to a compromise, with the majority of work to be undertaken late on Saturdays and Sundays over four weekends. Work will be scheduled so those jobs requiring occupation of the entire carriageway will occur only on weekends. For safety reasons, it will be necessary to close the High Street to through traffic during those periods.

The provisional programme for the works is:

Week ending September 7-8. - Reconstruction of the carriageway from Westfield Terrace to 22 Zetland Terrace, except for the final road surface.

Week ending September 15-16. - Reconstruction from 22 Zetland Terrace to Hall Grounds, except for the final surface.

Week ending September 22-23. - Hall Grounds to North Road, except for the final surface.

Week ending September 29-30. - Lay final road surface from Westfield Terrace to North Road.

Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during the week while drainage improvements, footpath and kerb works are undertaken. During the road closures, a signed diversion route will be in operation via the B1366 through Liverton Mines, Liverton Village, the A171 Moors road, Grinkle Lane and the A174. Access provision will be maintained for residents, businesses and the emergency services.

Pedestrian access along Zetland Road and the High Street will be maintained at all times.

Upon completion of each weekend's activities, the carriageway will be reopened to traffic. However, motorists are being asked to be aware of the temporary road surfaces.

Council leader Coun David Walsh, who is also a ward councillor, welcomed the news.

"This will mean that people who commute to and from Loftus, and workers at Boulby potash mine and Skinningrove steelworks, will not be faced with a lengthy diversion over the Moors road," he said. "It will also be good news for local traders, who need to keep their passing trade and get deliveries."

Coun Eric Jackson said it would mean that children would not have their journey to school disrupted.

"The work needs doing, as the existing surface is well past its sell-by date," he added.
