FORMER Magpies boss Kevin Keegan is backing Sir Bobby Robson's men to surprise some of the European big guns in the Champions League.

Despite seeing his new charges turn Newcastle over 1-0 on Saturday, Man. City manager Keegan still expects Newcastle to succeed in Europe and be among the Premiership big boys again this season.

Newcastle take a 1-0 lead into Wednesday's crucial qualifier against FC Zeljeznicar at St James' Park knowing the potential cash bonanza of the Champions' League proper awaits.

"They've got to get through their tie yet but I think they might surprise a few people in Europe," said Keegan.

"I think they'll do very well with that crowd behind them.

"With the players they've got, the energy and the good balance of experience of youth they could surprise a few people.

"They have a good mix and a great leader on the pitch in Alan Shearer. They could go well in Europe and I think they will finish in the top six again."

Sir Bobby Robson knows only too well just how big Wednesday's game is to the club, and despite Saturday's defeat remained upbeat about facing the Bosnians.

''We have a job to lift the lads for Wednesday but it won't be too difficult,'' said the former Sir Bobby.

''This defeat won't affect our confidence, we know just how important the tie is to the club.

''We did well over there but it is only half-time and we still have plenty to play for.''

Robson revealed that new signing Hugo Viana was likely to return to the starting line-up on Wednesday. Viana missed out at Maine Road on Saturday making way for the returning Gary Speed who slotted into a five-man midfield - Sir Bobby reverting to a back three formation.

With Speed likely to start on Wednesday as well, Jermaine Jenas could be the one to miss out.
