AN allotment association chairman says he is fed up with constantly having to deal with the problem of vandalism.

In the 17 years that he has owned an allotment overlooking Durham Constabulary's headquarters, between Newton Hall and Framwellgate Moor, Brian Grainger, chairman of the Newton Hall Allotment Association, says he has frequently experienced the problem, as have several others.

In the latest incident, an allotment had a poly tunnel costing around £250 slashed, leeks damaged, and vegetables pulled up.

Mr Grainger said he was tired of the situation. He said: "It's been reported to the police but as far as I know, it's never been investigated. You do get fed up after you labour for a year and this happens.

A police spokesman denied that the incident had been reported.

He said: "If the allotment holders feel there is a problem, we would urge them to contact PC Mark Bradley, the local beat officer, on (0191) 384 3040."
