Darlington manager Tommy Taylor will need to sign more than a new striker to re-ignite his team judging by Tuesday's dismal performance at home to Wrexham.

The Robins won 1-0 with a goal by Andy Morrell nine minutes before half-time as Quakers struggled to put the visitors' defence under any kind of pressure.

With Darren Ferguson - son of Sir Alex - pulling the strings in midfield, Wrexham deserved the three points which pushed them into third place in Division Three and left Darlington languishing fifth from bottom.

Taylor had started with the same team which had managed a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last Saturday, but pushed on-loan striker Graham Fenton up alongside Barry Conlon and pulled Ian Clark just behind the front two.

Fenton, who had scored on his Quakers debut against the Cherries, worked hard, but was given few opportunities to make his mark.

Darlington did improve in the second half when winger Neil Wainwright came on for Ashley Nicholls, but it was not enough.

Taylor said afterwards that an unlikely return for former Quakers hero Marco Gabbiadini was still on the cards, while chairman George Reynolds said he was prepared to swap teenager Adam Rundle for Carlisle United striker Richie Foran.

At least Quakers managed to find the back of the net against Bournemouth, with Fenton equalising after Derek Holmes had put the visitors ahead.

A number of chances went begging before Conlon scrambled in a close-range effort after 73 minutes, but Quakers failed to protect the lead and Alan Connell earned his side a point with seven minutes left.

Tomorrow, Taylor will be hoping his side can find some inspiration when he returns to his old club Leyton Orient, who have one point less than Darlington.
