The Meredith Trophy got under way this week and in the top match the holders Easington lost 5-2 to Frankland who will visit Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade in the next round they having had a first round bye.

Match of the day was between Newcastle West and Langbaurgh. The home team a\venged an opening day defeat with a hard fought 4-2 win but only after extra time. Paul Kindon had given the home team the lead, which was overturned by two goals from Matt Lymer. A goal from Barrie Joiyce took the tie into extra time where further strikes by Kindon and Asa Morris secured the victory for Newcastle. The win presents Newcastle with an a\way tie at Struggling Darlington.

Sunderland Saints contined with their unbeaten start to the season when they travelled to Stockton and won 3-0. Both teams kicked off with ten men and it was Saints who grabbed the initiative with a goal by Andy Roper. In the second half Stockton pressed forward and were caught twice on the break with goals by Les Goodliff and Paul Barrett. Saints will entertain Derwentside who got a bye due to CLS and Durham's recent resignation.

The HQ, Durham Fire tie was postponed due to a charity event and will be played on October 24/

Sedgefield lost their first match of the season in their league fixture with Tyne and Wear. The game could not have been close with Tyne and Wear winning by the odd goal in seven. They led throughout but Sedgefield snapped at their heels all the way through equalising on three separate occasions, Kevin Farrell (2), Paul Russell and Billy Khatib got the goals for the Fire team. Russell's goal was a superb volley struck from inside the box following a crossfield ball.

Derwentside won 7-1 at Darlington in the battle of the bottom two. Goals from Kevin Maddick (2), Mick Turner (2), Derek Sirett, Phil Donnelly and a first ever goal for Dave Moreland secured the points with Kevin Wilson bundling home a consolation goal for Darlo.
