KING George III had his best wig on beside an exhibition of caricatures.

Actor Ray Alexander was looking his regal best to help promote a collection of late 18th Century drawings by satirist James Gillray, entitled At the Court of George III.

Royals and politicians were the hapless victims of the artist's "warts and all" approach.

The King's fragile hold on sanity, the Queen's plainness and the Prince Regent's multiple mistresses all became visual jokes.

The exhibition is held at York's finest Georgian town house, Fairfax House, on Castlegate, tomorrow until January 6, 2003.

Peter Brown, Fairfax House director, said: "We are very lucky to have the work of such a virtuoso craftsman and entertainer on display here."
