NEWCASTLE United football star Carl Cort has been to court to get a restraining order issued against his estranged wife after he claimed she attacked him.

The couple clashed in front of their three-year-old son Christian, in a struggle that left the Newcastle striker's wife, Melissa, needing hospital treatment.

The pair fought at Mr Cort's £350,000 Newcastle bachelor penthouse after his wife found the £7m striker with another woman.

This week, the 6ft 3in former England Under-21 player moved out of the £500,000 bungalow in Wolsington Village that he shared with Mrs Cort as their stormy two-year marriage ended.

He bought the Quayside penthouse from Newcastle team mate Kieron Dyer and moved in on Wednesday.

Mr Cort's solicitor, Graham Shear, last night confirmed he had obtained an interim restraining order, preventing Mrs Cort from harassing his client and banning her from coming within 50 metres of his apartment.

Mr Shear said: "Carl is distraught and very upset."

The couple, who are going through a divorce, hit the headlines last Christmas when they were banned from Newcastle supermarket after an alleged trolley rage episode.

Security guards had to escort the pair from the Tesco Extra store in Kingston Park, after Mrs Cort allegedly barged to the front of a queue.
