THOUSANDS more people have pledged to "vote for life" by agreeing to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Hambleton District Council joined forces with UK Transplant - the national health authority supporting transplants - in a bid to get more people to sign on.

Every household in the district received a registration form with their electoral roll firm last month.

And by the closing date for the roll more than 10,000 donor forms had been returned.

Council chairman Percy Featherstone said: "We are delighted with the response so far - so many people have shown they want to save a life in the future by becoming an organ donor."

He added: "Hambleton is one of 40 councils in the UK to have signed up to this scheme and it could add as many as 500,000 names to the register before the end of the year - which would be a wonderful achievement."
