HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to take precautions against burglars as the nights draw in with the onset of winter.

The Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership - a venture led by the police and the district council - is advising people to take a number of straightforward precautions to make their homes more secure.

And in an effort to spur people on it is also offering 100 free shed or garage alarms to the first 100 residents who apply for them.

Community safety officer Rachel Bowles said: "Although statistics show that Richmondshire is one of the safest districts in the country there is always more we can do to combat crime.

"Simple, cost-effective security measures can make all the difference."

Security tips include:

* Locking windows and doors when you go out even if it is only next door or in the garden

* Using a light timer

* Drawing curtains

* Never leaving large amounts of cash around the home

* Fitting strong locks on doors and windows

* Installing a burglar alarm

* Ensuring all property is security marked

* Making sure sheds and garages are secure.

To receive a free garage or shed alarm, Richmondshire residents should send their name and address to Rachel Bowles, Community Safety Officer, Richmondshire District Council, Swale House, Frenchgate, Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL10 4JE.
