THE much anticipated U16 Girls' County match between Durham and Northumberland was played on Saturday at Houghall College, Durham Girls' home ground.

Some astoundingly competitive play was witnessed in what was a fast, skilful and physical game. Durham's opening try by Helen Grainge came after seven minutes and 20 minutes later, Rosie Mangle scored again for Durham and it seemed as if Northumberland had no response.

However, good, fast play on the wing earned the visitors a try and kept Northumberland in contention.

The second half opened with everything to play for. Durham's captain Abby Blackburn powered over the line to score after five minutes and soon went on to score a second try. Effective team play, good communication and strong running kept the Durham girls on the attack and stand off Rosie Mangle was rewarded for her consistently sparkling efforts with two tries, both of which were converted by Abby Blackburn.

All the Durham points in the 34-5 victory were scored by Darlington Mowden Park players. Mangle's hat trick earned her the Durham backs player award whilst the forwards award went to Donna-Marie Miller, who plays her club rugby at Hartlepool.

Eleven Mowden Park players represented their County and their energy and commitment was further witnessed the next day, Sunday, when they faced the reputable Percy Park U16 Girls at home. There were no signs of tiredness as the Mowden squad powered their way to a superb 41- 0 victory. The opening Mowden try came after five minutes from newcomer Sarah Ferguson; this was converted by captain Abby Blackburn. Further tries from Ashleigh Wright, Jenna Breakingbury, Rosie Mangle and a hat trick and two more conversions by Abby Blackburn gave the Park Girls a convincing and well deserved win.
