AFTER spending 12 months walking around almost every town and city in the North-East, Mark Reid, The Northern Echo's walks writer, is visiting bookshops signing copies of his latest publication.

Following the success of his book about North Yorkshire, Mr Reid has turned his attention to the towns and cities of Northumberland, Tyneside, Wearside, and County Durham with the publication of Town Trails: Northumbria. The book features towns from Barnard Castle to Bellingham.

Mr Reid, 33, a former brewery sales manager who lives in Harrogate, writes a regular column for The Northern Echo's 7Days section.

He said: "My first book of urban walks was designed to keep me going during the terrible foot-and-mouth epidemic last year.

"But I have enjoyed the walks and towns so much that I have decided to write a series of books about them."

He will be signing copies of his book on Saturday at Waterstone's in Grey Street, Newcastle, from 10am to noon, and at Ottakar's, Darlington, from 2pm to 4pm.

Town Trails: Northumbria, by Mark Reid (InnWay Publications), costs £5.95. For further details, call InnWay Publications on (01423) 871750.
