A PARTNERSHIP to regenerate a former coalfield area will be studied by academics as part of a national research project.

East Durham's Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) is the only one in the North-East, and one of only nine in the country, to be chosen for the research by Professor Murray Stewart and the University of West England.

Announcing the project last week, Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said the area had been selected for its unique geographical and socio-economic characteristics and its pioneering work in developing multi-agency regeneration partnerships.

East Durham will be the subject of a study looking at the capacity, structure and workings of LSPs, and its inclusion will ensure that its effective partnership working is developed further.

Formed in March 2001, the East Durham LSP is chaired by Councillor Alan Napier, the leader of Easington District Council.

It draws together all the key public, voluntary, community and private sector organisations to address local needs, plan services, set targets and monitor delivery.

Coun Napier said: "There is still a long way to go, but we have made good strides towards identifying problems and shaping resources more precisely.

"This must continue, and can only happen with the full commitment of all partners."
