SEDGEFIELD Community College has been highly commended in a report by inspectors.

The report from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) said the college was "an effective and improving college in which students develop positive attitudes towards their studies and behave well".

Inspectors praised the headteacher, Lynne Ackland, senior staff and college governors for their leadership and management.

Standards of teaching and learning were also praised, particularly in English and science, and in years seven to nine.

National Curriculum test results in year nine were above the national trend, inspectors reported.

The college, which was granted specialist sports status this year, provides a good level of pastoral care and "students form good and constructive relationships with each other and with their teachers", inspectors noted.

The report found that students with special needs made good progress and all pupils benefited from the college's emphasis on literacy development.

There had also been considerable investment in technology resources to support students' learning, including the development of a "vibrant and high quality Intranet for the college".

Forging good links with local community sports associations, as well as with arts and drama groups, provided excellent support for the college's successful bid for sports college status.

As a result of this, and a £40,000 National Lottery grant, the college has undergone a programme of development of its sports facilities.
