POLICE want the public's help to track down thugs who have been using wild birds for target practice.

The victims include a swan found shot through the head.

It is not the first time that North Yorkshire's wildlife liaison officers have been called in to deal with youngsters armed with air guns.

A teenager, who cannot be named, appeared in court in Richmond on Friday to face charges after another wounded swan was found on a lake at nearby Broken Brae Farm earlier this year. The case continues.

However, an investigation is also under way into the latest incident on the pond in an old quarry at Pallet Hill Farm, near Catterick.

This time, the mute swan was killed by the pellet and PC Mark Rasbeary is hoping walkers and people with homes nearby will come forward if they have seen anyone carrying an air weapon in the area.

"If they've been shooting at swans, then it's likely they've been shooting at other birds which winter at the pond, and there may be other bodies we don't know about," he said.

"Some of the Canada geese are quite tame and would be very vulnerable.

"Basically, we want to hear from anyone who has information which could help us put a stop to this sort of thing. Whatever they see, we would urge them not to be afraid to report it.''

The unlicensed shooting of wild birds can carry a hefty penalty with magistrates entitled to hand out fines or even a six-month prison term in more extreme cases.

Culprits could also find themselves facing firearms charges, which carry stiffer sentences.

Anyone with information is asked to call North Yorkshire Police, on (01609) 783131.
