A BUILDER working on a £500,000 refurbishment to the Empire Theatre, in Consett, says a ghost is prowling in the shadows under the stage.

His story has prompted a series of similar hair-raising tales from other staff.

Dave Black, the builder who is co-ordinating the revamp, said: "Speaking as a non-believer, I can say that I haven't seen or heard anything in the six months I have been involved with the facility.

"However, some of the workmen are quite serious about their experiences and I have no reason to doubt they believe what they have seen or heard."

Bar assistant Ann Robley said she had often felt a "cold presence", while former bar manager Ann D'Northwood claimed she was once pushed in the back while working alone at the counter.

Duty officer Derek Gettings said staff have attributed shadowy movements and an "eerie presence" to the ghost of a man they believe inhabits the cellar.

"It doesn't really bother any of the staff too much," he said.

"We have all got used to having uncanny feelings.

"However, we are very thankful that the cellar is not being disturbed by the building work, so the ghost won't feel too rattled and will hopefully stay where he is.

"At least that way, there won't be too many surprises when the building reopens."

The theatre is scheduled to re-open in early March, with acts already lined up including John Miller, nephew of big band legend Glenn Miller, with Big Band Crazy, Eagles tribute band Talon and the Moscow Ballet.
