CYCLING competitors from across the country converged on Northallerton for a race in memory of a local cyclist.

Professionals and amateurs completed a 13-mile course for the Hambleton Road Club's cyclo cross race.

Cyclists met on the Stone Cross playing fields for the fifth round of the sport's Yorkshire Championships.

Noel Clough from Northallerton and Keith Murray from Darlington both competed for the main trophy in the senior race and were successfully placed in the top 10. Ranked as one of the best cyclo racers in the country, Mr Clough is one of the favourites to win the championships.

The event was held in memory of keen local cyclist John Stevenson who died four years ago. His son Peter, a former national champion, travelled from his home in Belgium to compete at the weekend.

Organiser Allan Waton said: "Peter made an excellent start but slipped a few times on the bridge, allowing others to catch up. He came in third but did feel he could have done better and will be back next year to prove it."

While seniors had to complete eight gruelling laps, the younger riders cycled four.

Northallerton youngster Gareth Waton, 14, entered the competition for the first time and finished seventh.

Mr Waton said: "We hope that it will become an annual event here in Northallerton. The whole day was a complete success and our thanks go to everyone who helped."
