SEDGEFIELD Community College has been highly commended in a report by inspectors.

The report from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) describes the college as 'an effective and improving college in which students develop positive attitudes towards their studies and behave well.'

Inspectors praised headteacher Lynne Ackland, senior staff and college governors for their very good leadership and management.

Standards of teaching and learning were also highly praised, particularly in English and science, and in years seven to nine.

Achievement in National Curriculum test results in year nine is above the national trend, inspectors reported.

The college, which was granted specialist sports status this year, provides a good level of pastoral care and students form good and constructive relationships with each other and with their teachers, inspectors noted.

The report found that students with special needs make good progress and that all pupils benefit from the college's strong emphasis on literacy development.

Also there has been a considerable investment in ICT resources to support students' learning, including the development of a vibrant and high quality intranet for the college, inspectors said.

Forging good links with local community sports associations, as well as with local arts and drama groups, provided excellent support for the college's recent successful bid for sports college status.

As a result of this and a £40,000 National Lottery grant the college has recently undergone an extensive programme of development of its sports facilities.

Headteacher Ms Ackland said: "I am extremely proud of my staff and my students for their continuing commitment and hard work."
