TWO women entered the home of a Richmond pensioner on Wednesday and stole her purses.

The incident took place in Ronaldshay Drive at 1.10pm. One of the intruders talked to the elderly woman, while the other searched her house and took two purses. The women, believed to be in their mid-30s, left in a white car, similar to a Vauxhall Astra. One was blonde, the other was brunette. Both were wearing dark clothing. Anyone who saw anything suspicious or knows who the women are is asked to call (01748) 823055.

CRAKEHALL CAROLS: The Harp Singers will be in Victorian dress this Christmas to give a concert of music and readings at St Gregory's parish church, Crakehall, near Bedale. The concert, in aid of church funds, is tomorrow at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5, including wine and savouries, and are available at the door, or by calling (01677) 422833.

MUSIC SHOW: Paul Whittaker will demonstrate how deaf people can enjoy music at a concert evening on Thursday. Mr Whittaker, who is profoundly deaf, is performing at Northallerton College, between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. As well as playing, he will also be talking about concerts, education and the theatre. COFFEE SUCCESS: A coffee morning in Pickering raised £700 for people with disabilities. Scores of people turned out for the event at the Wilf Ward Family Trust's respite unit at Isabella Court, Westgate. Manager Christine Wright would like to thank everyone who supported the event.

HELPERS' GRANT: A £130,000 grant is hoped to boost the number of people becoming involved in local voluntary organisations. The Government grant has been awarded to Scarborough District Council for Voluntary Service, together with the town's Citizens Advice Bureau and Festival of Youth Arts. Development worker Phillipa Valentine said one aim was to encourage more young people to become volunteers.
