DON'T get caught out by pickpockets in the run-up to Christmas - that is the message from Stockton police.

The theft of cash and credit cards increase dramatically at this time of year as shoppers laden with bags become easy pickings for both the opportunist thief and organised gangs operating around the town centre.

Police, with the help of the mounted section, will be stepping up patrols in the town until January 2.

They hope to tackle the pickpockets and shoplifters to ensure the festive spirit in the town is not dampened by criminals.

Inspector Ray Morton said: "We will be working closely with the stores via radio link with security staff, targeting criminals and patrolling car parks, which can be particularly vulnerable during late opening hours.

"Hopefully, the high visibility patrols will deter the opportunist thief."

A festive warning in song has already been a hit with shoppers in Stockton and has helped to drum home a crime safety message in a novel way.

Inspector Eric Robinson, a keen amateur singer, re-wrote the words to two Christmas favourites, recording the tunes on CD s, and they have been played regularly in shopping malls around the town.
