A GROUNDBREAKING new arts programme is being delivered in a partnership between Wear Valley and Teesdale District Councils.
Good for the Soul is a three-year programme which aims to deliver arts activities to people who are either at risk of or actually suffering from mild to moderate mental ill health.
Wear Valley cultural services manager David Plews said: "Good for the Soul will have a number of elements.
"There will be arts workshops of every kind and a small grants scheme to support groups who wish to use the arts to increase their members' well being.
"Perhaps the most unusual part of the scheme is a referral system whereby local GPs and other health professionals may be able to refer patients who would benefit from arts participation."
He added: "Some people express surprise at our belief that the arts can benefit health, but there are many practical examples.
"Think of someone recovering from a stroke who may benefit from crafts, textile or sewing activities to help improve fine motor skills.
"Think of the mildly depressed person who would benefit from widening their circle of friends from engagement in any kind of group arts activity.
"Think of those who need to exercise more, but find the environment of a gym too threatening. A gentle dance class, drama movement games or learning to play a wind instrument may help enormously."
Activities will start in the New Year. The programme has been funded by the New Opportunities Fund, Northern Arts and the two councils and is part of the Dales Choice Healthy Living Centre Programme.
