Like a giant golden crown, a four-tonne brazier is gracing the skyline at one of the nation's favourite stately homes.

The remarkable ornamental Grecian brazier is the centrepiece of work to restore the historic Seventh Earl of Carlisle Monument that was damaged decades ago.

Placed at the summit of a 100ft column in the grounds of Castle Howard, near Malton, North Yorkshire, the wrought-iron and copper feature has taken months to create.

Thirsk Blacksmith Chris Topp, of Chris Topp and Company, said: "It has been an interesting project to handle and I'm pleased with the end result.

"Once the scaffolding has been removed from the monument then I should get a much better idea of how it looks."

The original structure was twice struck by lightning, leaving the column in a forlorn state and on English Heritage's At Risk register. Backed by £60,000 of Heritage funding, conservationists, sculptors and architects have been busy restoring the monument.
