HISTORIC Buildings Conservation has been given permission to convert the Grade-II listed New Maltings building in Langthorpe, near Boroughbridge, into 25 flats and two townhouses.

The former brewery building was constructed in 1904 and has been empty since the mid-1960s.

PARTY TIME: Sixth-form students from Thirsk School performed their Christmas show for fellow students, with a second performance for pensioners, for whom they also prepared and served a Christmas dinner. The school thanked those who helped, particularly John Smiths Coaches and Thirsk Community Minibus for help with transport for guests.

NOISY NEIGHBOURS: City of York Council has urged people holding parties over Christmas and the New Year to be considerate to others. In a drive to cut complaints of noise disturbance, anyone holding a party is asked to tell their neighbours of their plans beforehand.

CHARITY SHOW: The Richmondshire branch of the Alzheimer's Disease Society ended the year with a charity concert performed by the Highside Singers, from Kirkby Malzeard. The show, which included music and poetry, raised £292.

SIXTIES NIGHT: 1960s band American Drifters, featuring one original member of The Drifters, will perform in the Market Hall, Hawes, tomorrow, at 8.30pm. Tickets cost £12 and are available on (01969) 667192.

CHRISTMAS TRAFFIC: St Helen's Square, York, will be closed to traffic between 4.30pm and 9pm on Christmas Eve, during the Civic Christmas carol concert.
