POLICE are hoping to trace witnesses to help with an investigation into a fatal accident on one of Britain's most dangerous roads.
A pedestrian was killed in a collision with a lorry on the A66, near the Sedbury layby, at about 5am yesterday.
North Yorkshire Police traffic officers have spoken to staff at the nearby Scotch Corner services who confirmed they saw the victim shortly before the accident.
But police still want to speak to drivers who may be able to help them establish what the man was doing on the carriageway in the dark so early in the morning.
Although his identity has not yet been confirmed, the man was middle-aged, wearing dark clothing and carrying a green hold-all.
Anyone who can assist with the inquiry is asked to call (01423) 539474.
