Seven records were set in the North-East indoor athletics championships at Jarrow.

Ruth Irving, who represented Scotland in the Commonwealth Games, broke the senior triple jump record with 12.64m and also won the long jump clearing 5.90 just five centimetres off her record.

Craig Sturrock (Gateshead) broke the U29 men's shot record with 1.3.47m, Chloe Gill (Blackhall) jumped 4.05m in the U13 girls age group.

Two further records came in the girls shot putt competition with Katy Wilson winning the U13 with 10.85m with Stephanie Lamb (South Shields) and Kirsty Breen (Blackhill) also beating the old record. Emma McLelland (Hartlepool Burn Roa\d) reached 10.13m with Emma Foster (Gateshead) also bettering the previous U29 record. The final records to fall were in the U20 ladies section where Emma Morris (South Shields) set new figures in the long jump with 4.95 before soaring over 1.64m in the high jump.

The track championship will be staged at Jarrow on Sunday, January 5, 2003.
