Darlington'S Giving Tree Appeal has broken all records with a grand total of £40,000 of gifts and cash being collected from across the borough.
Organised by the council's social services, the appeal has involved more local businesses and schools than ever before.
Alongside this, churches and community groups, as well as council employees, have helped raise funds and collect gifts.
The Giving Tree itself stands in the front reception of Alpha 103.2 FM studios in Woodland Road and was yesterday surrounded by a mountain of gifts of all shapes and sizes.
Coun Bill Dixon, cabinet member for social services, said: "It never ceases to amaze me how this appeal goes from strength to strength. The people of Darlington and beyond have warmed to the Giving Tree Appeal over the last six years and, without their support and that of local businesses, it wouldn't be the success it is. Thank you."
Janet Robinson, appeal co-ordinator from social services, also thanked all those who helped.
"I think the reason it is so popular and gets bigger each year is because gifts are donated by local people and benefit local people," she said.
The gifts were yesterday being collected for distribution across the borough in time for Christmas, with staff giving up their weekend to help sort and pack the presents.
More than 2,000 people will receive a gift or hamper.
The main supporters of the appeal have been Alpha 103.2FM, Asda, the D&S Times and The Northern Echo, and Matalan. The Mardis Gras nightclub and 5 Battalion REME at Catterick Garrison have also been involved.
