A DOCUMENT which sets out a plan for the revival of the River Tees has received a commendation.

The Tees Navigation Strategy has been drawn up by Stockton Borough Council, Regional Development Agency One NorthEast, English Partnerships and British Waterways, and was prepared by the Waterway Conservation and Regeneration Group (WCR).

It identified sites for sustainable development along the river, from the Tees Barrage to Low Worsall, including the development of angling facilities at Preston Park and Yarm, and finding funding to create an international water sports venue.

The Royal Town Planning Institute, in its Northern Branch Awards Scheme 2002, said the plan was an "excellent, comprehensive document, likely to encourage good practice".

The assessors were looking for the originality, professionalism, creative partnership and other factors which make up an "outstanding" strategy.

Steve Fancourt, team manager of strategic planning at WCR, said: "The WCR was pleased to be involved in preparing this long-term vision for the Tees. As one of the three great rivers of the North-East, now is the time to re-establish a river culture that will bring jobs, investment and an enhanced quality of life for all who enjoy the river as a valuable resource. This strategy will help guide future change along the river, while conserving its unique qualities."
